Overview
We always knew a home renovation was going to be the plan as my father-in-law has an amazing business covering all things home renovations! The main parts of the house that we changed was the small outdated kitchen, the dining room and the two conservatories. One of the old plastic conservatories was used as a utility room but the roofs were so old they were leaking! We knocked through the kitchen/dining room and re built (with the same structure & floor plan) to make that into our new open plan kitchen/family room/diner.
Did you stick to the original plans?
We didn't have it in the original plans to have under floor heating, but half way through renovating we decided to add that in downstairs, as we have tiles throughout (minus the living room). We also didn’t plan to have the dining room/family room as one large area. It was going to be as the original layout was, with a kid’s play room leading onto a modern extension, but we decided to make it all open plan.
Budget and Timescale
We started the renovation project on 4th January 2020 and completed and moved in, with no ongoing work, on 10th April 2020. We lived out while the project was happening as it was all done as one big job.
Approximately £50k was spent on the renovation.
The most expensive area would have been the main kitchen/dining area of the house as there was a lot of change done to this area. We also built a large back wall to block off the sound from the park way traffic. This cost a lot in labour and materials as it took quite a long time to do.
Did you face any problems during the project?
We would count ourselves very lucky as we didn't come to halts with any major problems. The Aaron Group are an amazing company and really work at a high skill level at all times. The guys all have different skill sets, which works extremely well.
Looking back, is there anything you would change and do you have any tips for someone looking to do something similar?
We plaster boarded the whole garage, put heating in and carpeted it throughout so it is basically another room. I wish, while the work was being done, we put a wall up in the garage and blocked a tiny bit out for garden tools and then actually turned the garage into an office/games room. However, this is on our to-do list and can be done easily so we are not worried. This could then really be a five-bedroom house.
I would encourage anyone to renovate with the right company and the Aaron Group really are the ones to work with!
